Renewing Your CCW? You Now Need a Live Scan
This is new. Up until now, you could renew your CCW every two years without getting fingerprinted again. That changed on September 1, 2026. Now every CCW renewal in California needs a new Live Scan, even if you’ve had your CCW for years.
The renewal period is also changing. Starting January 1, 2027, new and renewed CCWs can be good for three years instead of two. If your license was issued before then, it keeps the term it was issued with.
We’re already seeing renewal clients come in for this, and the main thing people get wrong is the order of the steps. It depends on who issued your CCW.
If your CCW is through LAPD
Get your Live Scan first. You can’t finish LAPD’s online renewal without the ATI number from your Live Scan. LAPD has its own Request for Live Scan form for renewals, so bring that with you.
If your CCW is through the LA County Sheriff
It’s the other way around. Submit your renewal application first, then come in for your Live Scan. The Sheriff’s Department says that starting October 1, 2026, a Live Scan done before the application is submitted won’t be accepted. Check the Sheriff’s CCW page for their current instructions.
If your CCW is through another agency, check their renewal instructions before you come in.

This number is proof that you have been fingerprinted and you will need to submit the form with this proof to the Department. While it may take a while for the results of your Firearms database query to clear, in the meantime, giving the law enforcement agency that you are applying with proof that you have done what they asked you to do, is key.
