Why Do People Need Live Scan Fingerprinting?

Live Scan is required in California for many professional licenses, employment, volunteer positions, and background checks. Agencies request a Live Scan to verify whether you have a criminal history with the California Department of Justice (DOJ), and sometimes with the FBI.

Examples include jobs in healthcare, education, caregiving, and real estate, as well as adoption, visa, or immigration processes. Our team regularly helps individuals who need background clearance for employment, licensure, or international use.

What Should I Expect at My Live Scan Appointment?

Clients often ask what to bring, how long it takes, and what happens during their Live Scan appointment. We walk you through each step and make the process simple.

You’ll need to bring a valid government-issued photo ID and a completed Request for Live Scan Service form provided by your requesting agency. The scan itself only takes a few minutes, and we’ll electronically submit your fingerprints the same day to the DOJ and/or FBI.

Results are typically returned quickly — often within hours, depending on the agency. You can check the status of your submission through the agency or using the secure link the DOJ or FBI provides.

What type of fingerprinting do I need?

The type of fingerprinting you need depends on the agency requesting your background check. In most cases, especially for jobs, licenses, or volunteer positions in California, you’ll need Live Scan fingerprinting, which electronically sends your prints to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) or the FBI.

Some employers or government agencies outside California — or abroad — may require fingerprints on physical cards, such as the standard FD-258 fingerprint card. We can produce these by scanning your fingerprints digitally and printing them onto cards for submission.

If you’re unsure what format your agency requires, we’re here to help. You can also consult with your requesting agency or review state-specific requirements through resources like the California DOJ.

Electronic Live Scan Fingerprints or Ink Fingerprinting on FD258 Fingerprint Cards?

Most California agencies require Live Scan fingerprinting, which electronically transmits your fingerprints to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and, if necessary, to the FBI. This method is faster and more accurate than traditional ink fingerprinting.

However, some out-of-state and international agencies still require fingerprinting on standard FD-258 cards. We can assist with both methods. For FBI background checks and apostille services, we typically scan your fingerprints digitally and print them onto FD-258 fingerprint cards — saving time and ensuring clarity.

If you’re unsure which format your requesting agency needs, we’ll help you figure it out before your appointment. You can also check the California DOJ website or contact your requesting agency directly.

Understanding Live Scan Fingerprinting Costs

Live Scan fingerprinting costs are made up of two parts: the government’s background check fee and the fingerprint rolling (or service) fee we charge. The state fee varies depending on your job or licensing agency — it typically ranges from $0 to $75 and is determined by the California DOJ Fee Schedule.

Our in-office rolling fee is $35, which includes electronic submission and support. Mobile appointments may include an additional fee based on your location. For a detailed explanation of fees for large groups or onsite events, visit our Mobile Live Scan for Groups page.

If you’re not sure what fees apply to your situation, contact us with your ORI or Requesting Agency information, and we’ll help you confirm the total cost before your appointment.

We offer special group discounts! Call for details!

What to Prepare for Your Live Scan Fingerprinting Appointment

To make your Live Scan appointment smooth and successful, please bring the following:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport
  • Payment method — we accept credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, and other contactless forms

If your ID has expired or is missing, check out our guide on notarization without an ID for acceptable alternatives. Please note: we do not accept walk-ins — but same-day appointments are usually available.

Live Scan Fingerprinting FAQs – Los Angeles

What is Live Scan fingerprinting, and how is it used in Los Angeles?

Live Scan fingerprinting is a digital way to capture and transmit your fingerprints electronically to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and, when required, the FBI. In Los Angeles, it is the standard method for background checks for jobs, professional licenses, childcare and school volunteers, immigration, and other regulated activities. Unlike ink cards, Live Scan reduces errors and speeds up results because the fingerprints are sent electronically instead of being mailed.

Where can I get Live Scan fingerprinting done in Los Angeles?

Anshin Mobile Notary & Live Scan offers Live Scan fingerprinting by appointment at two locations: 5211 West Adams Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90016 and 113 N San Vicente Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90211. We also provide mobile Live Scan services across Los Angeles for individuals and groups who prefer on-site fingerprinting.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in for Live Scan in Los Angeles?

We do not accept walk-ins. All Live Scan fingerprinting in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills is by appointment so we can review your form, confirm the correct fees, and keep wait times low. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available. You can request an appointment through our Contact page or by calling our office.

How much does Live Scan fingerprinting cost in Los Angeles?

Your total Live Scan cost has two parts: (1) the government background-check fee set by the California DOJ and/or FBI, and (2) our rolling (service) fee. Our standard in-office rolling fee is $35, and mobile appointments include an additional travel fee based on your location. Government fees vary by agency and application type, so we usually review your completed “Request for Live Scan Service” form or ORI code before giving a final quote. For more detail, see our Live Scan Prices Near Me guide.

What do I need to bring to my Live Scan appointment?

Please bring three things to your Live Scan appointment in Los Angeles: (1) a fully completed “Request for Live Scan Service” form from your employer or agency, (2) a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport, and (3) a payment method accepted at our office. For a step-by-step checklist, review our article on how to prepare for your Live Scan fingerprint appointment.

How long does Live Scan fingerprinting take, and when will my results be ready?

The appointment itself usually takes about 10–15 minutes. In most cases, the California DOJ processes electronically submitted Live Scan fingerprints within 1–3 business days, and FBI checks often return in under 24 hours. Some agencies or license boards may take longer to review the results on their end, so the time before you receive a decision can vary. For more on timing and common causes of delay, visit our article on how long it takes to process Live Scan fingerprints.

How do I check the status of my California Live Scan submission?

After your appointment, you will receive a receipt with an ATI number. You can use this number and your date of birth to check your Live Scan status through the DOJ’s online Applicant Status Check system. We also provide a step-by-step guide on our How to Check the Status of Your Live Scan page.

Do you offer mobile Live Scan fingerprinting in Los Angeles, and what areas do you cover?

Yes. Our mobile Live Scan technicians travel throughout Los Angeles, including West Adams, Beverly Hills, Century City, Culver City, Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Playa Vista, Mar Vista, Venice, and nearby neighborhoods. Mobile Live Scan is ideal for busy professionals, families, schools, nonprofits, production sets, and employers who need multiple people fingerprinted at one location. To learn more about group options, see our Mobile Live Scan for Groups page.

What happens if my Live Scan fingerprints are rejected as unreadable?

If the California DOJ or FBI rejects your fingerprints due to image quality, we will re-scan and resubmit at no additional charge when the original Live Scan was processed by our office. Please bring your rejection notice to your follow-up appointment. If prints are rejected a second time for quality reasons, the DOJ or FBI will usually complete your background check using alternative methods so you are not repeatedly fingerprinted.

Can I reuse my Live Scan results for multiple agencies or different licenses?

No. Each Live Scan submission is tied to a specific requesting agency, ORI code, and purpose (for example, a teaching credential, real estate license, or volunteer role). If a new employer, licensing board, or volunteer program asks for a background check, they will require a new Live Scan with their own form, even if you were recently fingerprinted for a different organization.

Can I get Live Scan fingerprinting just to see my own criminal record?

Yes. California allows you to request a “Record Review” so you can see your own state criminal history, and you can also request an FBI Identity History Summary. Both require fingerprints, which we can submit using Live Scan or FBI-approved fingerprint cards. For a step-by-step explanation of how to request your own record, visit our See Your Criminal Record page.

How do I know whether I need Live Scan or fingerprint cards like the FD-258?

Most California employers and licensing agencies require Live Scan because it goes directly to the California DOJ (and sometimes the FBI). Out-of-state boards, federal agencies, or foreign governments may still require traditional ink fingerprint cards, such as the FBI FD-258. We provide both options in Los Angeles and can scan your prints digitally and print them onto FD-258 cards when needed. For more detail on when cards are required, see our FD-258 fingerprint card guide.

Is Live Scan fingerprinting required for a California background check?

For most California professional licenses and many regulated jobs, Live Scan is the required method for submitting fingerprints to the California DOJ. This includes fields like teaching, healthcare, caregiving, and many state-issued permits. You can learn more about how Live Scan fits into a California background check on our California Background Check page.
