California DOJ and FBI Record Review (Rap Sheet)
When it comes to obtaining your criminal record (also referred to as Rap Sheet or Identity History Summary Check) from 1. the California Department of Justice (CADOJ) and the 2. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), our services extend beyond notarization and fingerprinting to include assistance in acquiring both types of background reports so you can see your criminal record both in California and anywhere in the world. It’s important that you understand the difference between them. We spend a lot of time explaining these differences to clients. Let’s explore how Anshin Mobile Notary and Livescan can help individuals obtain 1. your California Background Check from the California Department of Justice CADOJ and 2. your FBI Background Check from the FBI.
1. California Background Check
The CADOJ offers Record Review background reports for applicants. We provide the required Request for Livescan Service Record Review form to applicants. Applicants simply need to bring in their drivers license or other government issued photo identification. We take their fingerprints and submit the data, together with the information in their form, to the CADOJ. The CADOJ will mail applicants their background report.
2. FBI Background Check
Applicants often visit us who are discouraged after visiting the post office, trying to get an FBI Background Check. We can give you the same thing, without the hassle, and you’ll receive the results within minutes. Applicants simply need to bring in their drivers license or other government issued photo identification. We will provide a form to fill out. We take their fingerprints and submit the data, together with the information in their form, to the FBI. The FBI will email applicants their rap sheets in 2 separate emails. We teach applicants how to access their information, as it may be a bit tricky. Once you retrieve your record, you cannot get it again without getting fingerprinted again. So it’s important that you follow the instructions in the emails you receive and make sure you understand it when we teach you about it. Of course, we’re always happy to help you if you have problems.

What’s the process to request a DOJ background check?
Start by downloading and completing the BCIA 8016RR form, available through the California DOJ. Bring the completed form and valid ID to your Live Scan appointment. How long does it take to receive a copy of my criminal record?
Most applicants receive their DOJ report by mail within 3 to 10 business days after fingerprinting. Delays may occur due to mailing issues or processing volume. If it’s been more than 2 weeks, you may contact the DOJ with your ATI number to check status.
What ID do I need to request my criminal record through Live Scan?
You must bring a current government-issued photo ID, such as a California driver’s license, state ID, out-of-state license, or a passport (U.S. or foreign). The ID must not be expired. See full ID guidelines.
Can I get my criminal history for personal review?
Yes. A personal record review is your legal right under California law. It’s useful for checking accuracy, preparing for immigration, or taking steps to seal or expunge a record. Your results will not be shared with any employer or agency.
Is it legal to check your own criminal record in California?
Yes. California law allows individuals to request and review their own criminal history. This is commonly done through the DOJ’s Record Review process, using the BCIA 8016RR form and Live Scan fingerprinting.
Will my Live Scan results show expunged charges?
Possibly. Even expunged or dismissed charges may appear on your DOJ report, often with notes indicating they were resolved or dismissed. These reports are intended for your personal review. If you’re seeking to seal or expunge your record, we can connect you with an attorney or assist with the process through our Record Sealing and Expungement Services.
How do I interpret the results of my criminal record?
Your DOJ report will list any arrests, charges, convictions, and outcomes. While we cannot interpret the legal implications of your record, we can refer you to an experienced attorney for help. If you’re pursuing record correction, sealing, or expungement, we can also guide you on next steps. Learn more here.
