People often try UPS or the post office first. They do different things, and neither works the way most people expect.
The Post Office Doesn’t Do Live Scan
The post office only takes fingerprints for the FBI’s own online request: you apply and pay on the FBI’s website first, and the FBI then directs you to a post office for your prints. From there, it follows the same electronic process as any other FBI submission.
There is no California Live Scan at the post office, so it won’t help if your job, license or school needs a California DOJ background check.
What our clients tell us: machines that aren’t working, being sent to another post office, and staff who aren’t trained in capturing prints, which leads to rejected submissions.
Some UPS Stores Do Live Scan, but Not All
Only some UPS Store locations offer California Live Scan, and they don’t do electronic FBI (DOCE) submissions. The equipment and operator experience vary. The complaint we hear most: people show up and are told, “Sorry, our machine is down.”
Before You Go Anywhere
- Call ahead and confirm the machine is working and that they handle your type of submission.
- Bring the Request for Live Scan form from your agency, with the correct ORI.
- Know whether you need your California record, your FBI record, or both.
